I live in a agrucultural area (mainly wheat and sugarbeet), and have never seen the vehicle you describe. The closest I have seen is a sprayer, this has arms (folded when on the road) and a high ground clearance so as not to damage the crop.

Also, if you think that the new mini cooper is a small car, you ain't seen nothing. Search "Mr. Bean" on YouTube and look at the real Mini he drives.

I was out in a rural area of imperial Co., California recently and noticed some bales of hay that were the BIGGEST dang bales I've ever seen. We're talking bales bigger than a full sized van.

Maybe this piece of equipment is used to pick up those monster hay bales.

It sounds like your talking about a "row tractor" or "high crop" tractor. These are general terms for tractors that are used to harvest crops that grow very tall like corn. The height/size is needed to see over the crop and not damage it before it's harvested. The tractor will tow the harvesting equipment behind it.
If it had a long chute attached at rear and a wide sycle at the front it may have been a harvester(corn, potatoes, etc.)
