I think the wagon itself would be too much for a riding mower

It depends on the size of the hay wagon. My dad’s friend owned a dairy farm and he had a huge hay wagon and his tractor’s tires were taller then me (I’m 5′6″). A regular riding lawn mower wouldn’t have been able to budge that wagon.

Well if your farm tractor is say 100 horse power and is geared to pull heave loads and will haul 35 people because that is how many people can sit comfortably on your wagon(the tractor could haul probably 100 people)
Then the lawn tractor or riding mower at 5 HP can probably haul 1 or two people plus the hay wagon. Actually the hay wagon is too big to pull with a riding mower.
You would be better served with a smaller wagon with maybe three or four people max.
For that matter, don’t you have a pickup?

read the owner’s manual for the max weight.

If you couple the mower direct to the hay wagon, probably none at all. The inertia of the heavy hay wagon will be too much for the mower to get it moving.
However, if the mower has a really good slipping clutch (hydraulic) or if you couple it with a long elastic tow rope, then it can possibly get the hay wagon moving with all 35 people aboard. If it doesn’t, two or three of them will need to get out and push.

Riding mowers aren’t intended to pull any great amount of weight. You might be able to get 3 or 4 people, if they were thin, but any more than that and you’re going to wreck the mower’s engine.

I have little doubt that even a small riding mower could pull a four wheel hay wagon on a dry road or pavement, but the issue isn’t can it pull it. The problem is, can it stop it. Many, many people have learned the hard way that their towing rig was inadequate when they tried to slow down or stop the trailer. Using that wagon or the trailer with that little tractor in your photos is flirting with disaster unless you intend to never leave the flat hay field.

We sponsered a hay ride halloween night and could carry 6 to 8 people and hay with no problem. The lawn tractor was a John Deere with a 17.5 hp engine.
