What is the northernmost area in which productive farming can occur. I know Ranching can occur as far north as the animals being ranched can live, but I am talking growing food - as in food that can be sold into the world market.

I ask this because I saw a picture that claimed to be Alaska that had large farm equipment ploughing a field. I didn't know there was any farms in Alaska.

For example, what percentage of plant agriculture is used for human consumption, animal feed, industrial conversion, where would I find these statistics online please?
Thanks Don- do you know where on either of those sites I could find information on use of plant crops by purpose? I knew of the sites but had trouble finding that data at the sites.

Ayliann asked:

We recently bought a small 25 acre farm. The terrain is mostly flat with no major issues like rocks or dangerous slopes. The guy that I called about shredding the land wants $600 to do it one time. That price prompted us to think about buying our own tractor instead.

I found a used, 2-year-old Yanmar 2500, 2 x 4, 3 cylinder deisel tractor. It comes with a 5 foot shredder and also a front end loader. He wants $8000. He wants to upgrade to a 4 X 4.

My question is: Is this tractor big enough to handle our 25 acres? Or should I look for a 4 X 4? What does 2 X 4 and 4 X 4 mean?

I learned that the value of land is so great that it would take decades of farming to pay off. How do farmers, even large farm owners make it worth it?

I'm doing a report for school and I need some sites that tell me how we can help prevent the contamination of our water by animal agriculture.
I already found websites that provide information on the waste of water on animal raising for food. I can't find what we can do to change that. Any help appreciated, but I need sources like web sites. Thanks.
